TROVE DIGITISED NEWSPAPERS

Search Tips

  • Search for names, places, addresses, ship names.
  • Refine your search results. Use the category and decade filters before the title filter as items are likely to be in newspapers Australia wide.
  • Use phrase searching – “John William Lee”. The speech marks hold two or more words together during the search.
  • Consider how names would have appeared in the newspapers of the day. Try alternative phrase searches “John Lee”, “John W Lee”– “Jon Lee”, “Mr J Lee”, “Lee John William”. His wife could have been recorded as Mrs John Lee or Mrs Lee.
  • Engagement and wedding notices – search using the two surnames. “SMITH JONES” (male surname first)
  • Death notices have the surname then death details, then first name/s of the deceased followed by details of family connections. I.e. son of, husband of, father of – so do a phrase search for known family members or surname AND suburb/town name.
  • Search by ship name or surname for passenger lists {arrivals and departures) and for detailed descriptions of voyages. It is common to find ongoing passenger lists from Freemantle, Adelaide or Melbourne so do not limit your search to port of arrival or port of departure.
  • Use AND, OR and NOT. These Boolean terms must be used in upper case and can be used in conjunction with brackets to include, exclude or narrow down search results.
  • AND will give you results with both search terms that you enter “John Broderick”
    • AND (Goulburn or Cornwall).
    • OR specifies synonyms or alternative forms – John (Carlton OR Carolan)
    • NOT (or minus sign) excludes terms from search “James Cook” – Captain. Terms you may like to exclude from surname searches are -street, -roads and -avenue. In Gympie – mining.
