Love in War Time

In the closing days of World War 1 a young Gympie soldier lay in hospital in England recovering from pneumonia. He was cared for by a British nurse and he penned this verse in her autograph book.

My love is like a cabbage
Divided into two,
The leaves I give to others,
The heart I give to you.

He added ‘Dinkum’ at the end plus his rank and serial number. How could any girl resist such poetry so they were married before he returned to Australia. She followed shortly after. They set up home in Gympie and raised a family and hopefully as they say, “lived happily ever after.”
