Sarah Ann Caldwell PATTERSON
Sarah Ann Caldwell PATTERSON nee McKean was born on the 29/04/1840 in Belfast Ireland to parents David McKean & Sarah Ann nee Smith. She is the second daughter and middle child of five.
About 1858 Sarah immigrated to Australia when she was 18 years old. In 1867 she married George PATTERSON at the Manse in Collins Street East Melbourne Victoria. At the time she was working as a storemaid.
As well as accompanying her husband in his military exploits, Sarah wrote poetry verses, some of which were later printed and dedicated ‘To my husband.’
On 19/08/1926 Sarah died in Gympie and is interred with her husband.

GYMPIE, . Monday. — The death occurred on August 19, at Gympie. of Mrs. Sarah Ann Patterson widow of the late Colonel George Patterson. Mrs. Patterson was 83 years of age, and had resided in Gympie since 1868. She was born at Belfast. Ireland, and came to Australia when 18 years of age. After her marriage in Melbourne to Mr. George Patterson they came to the Gympie goldfield, where Mr. Patterson entered into the drapery business in partnership with his brothers, founding the firm known as Patterson Bros. This was continued until the death of the partners. The deceased lady had great literary ability, and a book of her verses was published.
During the South African war she accompanied Col. Patterson to South Africa, where he was the first Britisher to enter Kimberley when that town was taken. The deceased made the first emu badge, which was adopted by the mounted infantry, Mrs. Patterson survived her husband by 15 years. Her funeral at Gympie was largely attended.
