2024 EVENTS – GFHS Monthly Talk, Saturday 21st September

21 September, 2024 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
$5.00

GFHS RUNS & PROPERTIES TALK THIS SATURDAY

Amidst the Lands Records collection currently held by the Gympie Family History Society, and to highlight the benefits of closer examinations of such records, September Society Talk will be about two specific properties, from the thousands of document currently being digitised and the thousands of records being obtained for the society’s collection from archives.

Within the County of Lennox, in the Parish of Teebar, find out about what our historical records can uncover about Teebar Station, near Broweena, which was established in 1849 at an estimated size of 16,000 acres. The property has been owned by several influential people including Maryborough’s second mayor, John Eaton and the grandson of the founder of David Jones.

And also within the County of Lennox, but in the Parish of Woonga, now known as Southside, hear about one subdivision of Miners Homestead Lease No.147 which took place in the 1960s. Owned by Myles Vincent MACDONNELL and purchased by the Queensland Housing Commission and cut up into 75 small properties not bigger than 36 perches. A property which was owned by Benjamin GERLER in the 1870s and was nearly 40 acres in size.

The Talk will start at 2pm on Saturday the 21st September 2024, and be around 45 to 60 mins, with questions and answers afterwards. Tea and coffee provided, so come for the talk, and stay for a chat. On this subject, or anything family history and or Gympie and Wide Bay related.

Note, the society’s new expanded collection, Gympie and Wide Bay Lands Records, from the pre and post gold rush eras though primarily of the Inter Wars period. At present the majority of documents are of properties outside the Gympie city location, rural agricultural leases that date from around the 1910s and 1920s (but also stemming back as far back as the 1870s for some), to around the 1970s and further for some records, and highlight the details about the lands as it was, the improvements they had to and did make, their agricultural standings, the problems with the introduced prickly pear situation of the times, even the financial situation of these farms and timbergetters. The collection of Miners Homestead Leases and Freehold Leases has only recently begun yet is growing by hundreds of documents each month.

Remember, our library facilities, rooms and members are available to assist your family history research needs afterwards.

2024 Library – Gympie Family History Society is open most Saturdays and once a month we invite someone to present a topic of importance to all researchers on both the local district and state, and anywhere in the world their ancestors have hailed from, and the records those areas might hold.
